Osteria Conchetta (Milano)

This traditional Italian restaurant was right around the corner from where we were staying in the Navigli district. On our first night in Milan, we mosey on down to try our luck without a booking. The waiter signals for us to wait and the bartender hands us a small glass of Prosecco each. Liking their style! London….you can learn a thing or two about this queuing system. We finish our drinks and shortly after, are shown to our table – result!

Sat down, ordered our meals, chose our wine and were given an amuse bouche of sliced pork to whet our appetite.

An antipasti platter to start – selection of cheese and cold cuts including prosciutto, mortadella, bresaola and two types of salami with a side of marinated mushrooms and sweet chutney to bring the wonderful flavours altogether.

The waiter then pushes out a worktop with a huge wheel of open parmesan cheese on top and pulls up beside our table. Now we’re in business!

He pours vodka in and lights the whole thing up, scoops a pot of hot risotto straight in and begins to stir. As he goes along, he carefully scrapes the sides of the melted parmesan into the mix, enabling us to inhale the aroma bouncing off the risotto.

We’re each served a portion with thinly sliced fried onions garnished on top. Getting a whiff of the dish only enhanced the pleasure of tasting it. The flavour? Amazing! Have a mouthful of this and let the cheese speak for itself.

Next up was a veal schnitzel bigger than the size of a steering wheel – I kid you not! Tenderised veal with a perfectly crisp golden crumb. Big on taste, big on flavour too.

For the final act….the osso bucco – a typical Milanese dish of veal shin from a calf’s hind shank, aimed to be the most tender part. It was served on a bed of mashed potatoes. Succulent and bursting with flavour. And the best bit….getting into that delicious bone marrow!

What a great introduction to authentic Milanese cuisine. With delicious food and sizeable portions, this hidden gem is a must try when in Milan.

Till next time…Outskies!
