Marie’s “cheap and cheerful” Cafe

If you’re after a quick feed that won’t break the bank, then look no further than Marie’s Cafe – operating as a greasy spoon by day and a Thai Kitchen by night.

A few minutes walk from Waterloo station, you’ll find this hole in the wall serving up Thai food at reasonable prices. Book ahead or be prepared to queue up as this tiny restaurant fills up quickly.

There’s BYO for £1 per head so bring along some booze if you fancy. I opted for the Thai milk tea (£2.00) which was sadly watered down with too much ice! See what happens when I try to be good and go for the non-alcoholic choice? Ha!

A mixed starter of fish cakes, prawn toast, chicken satay, spring rolls and prawn crackers at £8.80 – decent enough!

Mixed starter

Chicken panang (£6.50) with egg fried rice (£1.80). Not the best I’ve had but not the worst either.

I rate how good a Thai restaurant is based on how well they can execute a pad kee mao (drunken noodles). A dish that should have really been thick, flat rice noodles, came out thin instead. There was flavour, but just didn’t quite hit the mark. Where’s the basil? Where’s the chilli? A tasty dish no doubt but falsely named drunken noodles.

Not the most authentic but a close resemblance of the cuisine and for the price, there’s not any reason to complain really! Service is quick and blunt so don’t expect a leisurely dinner and make sure you’re armed with some cash as they don’t accept cards.

Food + drinks + service = £10-15pp

Till next time…Outskies!
